Me with some freshly picked vegetables from our own back yard organic vegetable garden right here in Oakville. Everything seems to grow so well here in Oakville. Keep in mind that starting a small organic garden does not cost very much money and does not take up much space.
Benefits of starting your own vegetable garden:
- You will be eating the freshest vegetables possible.
- Absolutely no poisons and pesticides on your vegetables.
- A 4×8 garden actually saves tons of carbon foot print.
- We are really doing our part to help the environment and our health.
Think about this, all summer long as we go to the store and buy our vegetables – this has a dramatic negative impact on the environment.
- These vegetables you are buying from the store were most likey grown with tons of cancer causing pesticides in large fields in another country.
- These vegetables are then picked and processed stored and then boxed to get ready for distribution.
- They first are shipped to a large area distributor in a country or province.
- Once there they are unpacked from the trucks and put into a large wharehouse.
- The next step is packing the vegetables up into smaller orders and shipped to a smaller wharehouse in your local town.
- Once there they are unpacked and sit in a wharehouse again waiting to be shipped to your local grocery store.
- Then once the order is placed they are loaded once again on a truck then shipped to your local store.
- Here they are unloaded into the back cooler room awaitng to be placed on the shelves for sale.
- Next they are put on the display in the morning we come along and buy these (fresh) Vegetables… LOL.
All this shipping and handling can take up to 2 weeks. When you get your fresh vegetables in a grocery store, they may not be fresh at all. Once picked many of the actual vitamins and minerals and antioxidants lose thier potency. Eating fresh from your garden is soo much healthier. You can taste the difference. Also the impact of all the pollution on the environment to ship and store all these foods across the country for weeks is destroying our beautiful planet.
What a beautiful thing to teach children responsibility and care. Also it teaches them the principles of work and reward. Planting a small seed and watch it grow into something so big and healthy with just some water soil, sunshine and a bit of care.
3 reasons toalways buy locally if you do have to buy fruits and vegetables
- Purchasing local grown vegetables and fruits help support your own economy
- Local grown produce also has less poisons and pesticides because we have stricter laws
- Local grown produce is always fresher because its grown right here it gets to the store in a day or two.
If every one who had a home in Ontario actual put a small 4×8 vegetable garden in our back yard we could make a huge impact on the health of canadians, save money on our expensive vegetables and have a huge impact on our environment. So what are you waiting for canada ?
